Welcoming the Wolf- GCU Sport

Last Wednesday night GCU’s sports teams partied away in Malones for the Official Launch party of the Wolves.

This years Sports Council created last weeks event in hopes of raising funds for Sports Ball (which is arguably the best night out of the year) and succeeded in raising almost £700 towards the event! Last years Sports Council came up with a brand name for GCU’s sports teams – so that they had an identity to be recognised with when competing… and so GCU Wolves was born.

Following the brand name, we needed a mascot to match.. right?? The not so well kept secret was finally revealed… Caley Wolf received a warm welcome of howls and applause at his revealing ceremony with drinks flowing and many eyes to bare witness.

The turnout was greater than expected, with Sauchiehall Lane queued up to the end of the cobblestone road – our teams were eager to catch a glimpse of the seven feet tall, bright blue Wolf.

The catch of entry for the event was that each sports team in attendance had to dress up in a different sports teams attire. We saw the rugby boys in tutus and crop tops attempting to mimic the dance team, surfers, cheerleaders, tennis players and many more interesting concepts which was great to see everyone get involved.

Sports Council Chair, Michael Docherty commented, “I feel like the launch was a success for GCU Sport. The Wolves, as a movement, has been well received by sports teams since its introduction in 2017. It was clear, from the event on Wednesday, how big the sporting culture is at GCU as Malones was at capacity with student-athletes. As Chair of Sports Council I would like to thank Mel and Ollie (Sports Council members) for organising such a well ran event and I’m sure future events will be of similar calibre.”

The Sports Council would like to thank everyone who came along on the night and they are thrilled that GCU finally have a full sports brand to associate with. It’s not too late to join one of Caley’s many sports teams, just check them out on The Students Association website.

The Edit were thrilled to be asked to join the pack for the night to cover the event!
