The GCU Men and Women’s Rugby are participating in Movember to raise awareness and tackle the stigma which surrounds men’s mental health.
Studies show that 40% of young men aged 18-24 will at some stage suffer with moderate to severe depression.
Alongside the Movember charity, GCU Men’s Rugby are supporting PAPYRUS, which aims to prevent suicide amongst young people under the age of 35.
Co-Captain Chris Scullion said: “Both PAPYRUS and Movember are two charities with missions that can resonate with the whole of GCU Rugby as both support a cause close to all of our hearts. We feel it is our job to do our best to spread awareness so these young men know that they are not alone and there is always someone to talk to.
“It is a privilege for us to be able to support these two charities that do amazing work in Scotland and further afield. We as a club would like to tackle the stigma around speaking out and getting help when it is needed.”
In addition, the men’s team also organised a raffle at their quiz night on 15 November which raised £1,080.
Meanwhile, the GCU Women’s club are completing a strava challenge for Looseheadz.
The charity is a rugby clothing brand whose mission is to place a mental health lead at every rugby club worldwide and equip them with the resources needed to support the cause.
Social Secretary Tyra Scally explained what the challenge entails, why the team are wanting to raise awareness and how you can help your own mental health.
She said: The challenge is to walk or run 60km (37 miles) during the month of November for the 60 men who lose their lives because of suicide globally, every hour.
“We are raising money for Looseheadz because like physical health, mental health is something we all have and need to take care of. There are plenty of ways to stay mentally healthy, such as, eating well, exercising regularly, learning new things, and maintaining a good study-life balance.”
Tyra also appealed for donations with the team already exceeding their target and thanked those who have already donated: “The money raised will go to the Looseheadz Foundation, so please give us as many donations as you can to help our challenge. We have already achieved our target of £300 which is utterly amazing. We really appreciate everyone’s support so far!”
