Matt Corby delivered a solid one-hour set yesterday evening at Glasgow’s Saint Luke’s.
Starting us off with his latest single Monday, Corby’s voice commanded the hall for the full hour. It is more powerful and more in tune than any of the instruments, whether belting or in falsetto. The backing vocals were inaudible despite a good sound mix – Matt’s own voice is to blame.
The only thing overpowering his vocal was the cheer of the crowd. The backing band was just that: backing the singer, no virtuosity or complicated arrangements. There was no light “show”.
Matt Corby needs none of that. He captivates the audience entirely by his own talents: there was hardly a smartphone to be seen, as if no one wanted to obstruct the ceremony.

The show was almost religious. A church organ overlooking the stage, Corby’s biblical appearance, singing of light and darkness, flowing rivers and paths.
Not a minute after 10 o’clock, exactly an hour into the show, the band said goodbye to the crowd begging for “one more tune!”
Their prayers were not answered, but I am certain Matt will be forgiven.
