‘Young Sinatra IV’, fits almost seamlessly into the ‘Young Sinatra’ series. It began with the mixtape ‘Young Sinatra’ in 2011 and has to come to its conclusion in album form, with ‘Young Sinatra IV’. Logic announced the date of the project in his ‘YSIV freestyle’ on the 28th August, sending his old school fans into frenzy, but was it up to the hype?
Most of the album is a homage to not only the Young Sinatra series but Logic’s progression as an artist and deftly displays his many talents. His superb storytelling is apparent in ‘Street Dreams II’ and ‘Legacy’. We get the pleasure of hearing him going off in ‘Everybody Dies’ and the fantastic remix of ‘Icon’, ‘ICONIC’ featuring Jaden Smith.
He goes beyond his usual levels of cold in ‘100 Miles and Running’ featuring John Lindahl & Wale, with ‘Rap God’ levels of speed in his ‘Jack The Ripper’ rap at the end. Any Logic song featuring Big Lenbo is guaranteed to be a classic with ‘The Adventures of Stoney Bob’, featuring Kajo, Big Lenbo & Slay Dro, being just that.
Overall the album is a fantastic salute to the end of the Maryland rapper’s finest series, with a few exceptions. One of these is ‘One Day’ featuring OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder, which is clearly a pop song and breaks up the flow and feel of the album.
It certainly isn’t the “boom bap” promised to his fans, known as ‘The RattPack’, at the end of his ‘YSIV freestyle’. It is a shame as it ruins an almost perfect ending to the series, but Logic obviously feels pressure to appease his new fans as well as his old ones.
Finally, ‘Thank You’ featuring Lucy Rose & The RattPack is a beautiful tribute and another fantastic project by the ever improving and growing rapper, which will leave the world counting the days until his next album ‘Ultra 85’.
