Five Ways to be More Sustainable

Some may say that sustainability is just trend within the fashion industry suggesting the hype around it will die down eventually. However, we need more people within society to see sustainability as a lifestyle choice, not just the latest trend.

No-one is expected to change their ways dramatically or to give up their favourite brands. We are a group of fashion students who love to shop and treat ourselves, there is no denying that, but if everyone was to think just a little bit more ethically when it came to their clothing habits, we would be on our way as a society to making a difference.

Fashion has been causing major negative implications on the environment, being named the second biggest polluting industry in the world mainly due to the current demand for fast fashion. We, as students, understand that it is not so easy for us on a budget to give up our beloved high street brands! Therefore, we have put together a handy guide for you like-minded individuals who want to do their bit to help the problem!

One: If it’s broken- fix it!

Easy! Far too many of us are too quick to write off our clothes as soon as there is the slightest little tear! Get out a sewing kit, or pass your piece to family or friends who can work the needle and thread and bring your garment back to life!

Two: Product Aftercare is essential!

It may seem obvious but check the tag on your item before washing! The instructions aren’t just there for fun- they aim to keep the garment in great shape! Also, some great tips for keeping your pieces pristine is to wash dark clothing inside out: avoid that washed out look by helping your clothes keep their colour. Let your clothes dry naturally as opposed to tossing them in the tumble dryer to avoid shrinking, fading and sometimes stretching!

Three: Depop!

Everyone has a smartphone, most of us have PayPal, so there is no reason to not get on Depop and rehome clothes whilst making yourself some extra cash to tide you over till SAAS comes in. The app has more than 10 million users worldwide, so there will definitely be someone out there who will adore that dress at the back of your wardrobe you wore back in fresher’s week.

Four: Donate!

It’s always a good thing to help out your local charity! Next time you are having a major clear out with bin bags ready for the dump, drop them off at your nearest charity shop! You can check and see if there are any bargains whilst you are there.

Five: Do your research!

For those of you who like to look into the ‘why’ before you buy, check out what brands on the high street are promising in terms of sustainability. A great place to start is having a nosey at ‘The SCAP agreement’’ (sustainable clothes action plan). This will give you an idea of what high street brands are involved and what they are doing to help work towards a more sustainable industry.
