Being a kid. Those were the days, right? Getting covered in grass stains, getting up early on Saturday mornings to watch cartoons and existing on a diet of chicken nuggets.
Somehow this became being covered in red wine stains, spending your Saturday mornings in bed after a week of early starts and still existing on a diet of chicken nuggets?
There’s a lot of things we miss about being young, and let’s be honest, not having to dress yourself is one – unless, like me, you threw a strop every time your mum dressed you and flat out demanded to wear yellow exclusively.
So, here’s a few of my fondest childhood sartorial choices. And, since I’m forever trying to relive the glory days, how to channel them in your adult wardrobe. Simply click on the picture to shop the look.
1. Baby grows
The ultimate childhood get-up. I don’t really remember what it’s like to wear a baby grow, but I’d imagine it was a beautiful time in my life. Today’s equivalent is, of course, the bodysuit. They’re easy to style, extremely versatile and even come with popper studs! Perfect for when your nappy needs changed.
2. Chokers
Back in the day, they were from Claire’s accessories. They were perfect for every budding Avril Lavigne wannabe, but now, pretty much every shop going has their version of these teenage rebellion staples. Update them with chord or velvet versions – leave the plastic ones in the nineties.
3. Co-Ord Sets
What was it with mums and matching sets? I guess they had more important things to think about than finding a nice top that’d go well with your leggings, like running a house and looking after us. But who’d have known years later we’d all still be channelling our busy wee mums and wearing matching patterns?
4. Rucksacks
No, no, not the Adidas or Reebok bad boys we lugged our PE kits around in. Nowadays, they’re a lot more stylish, yet still sensible. For when you want to pretend you’re going to a finger painting class instead of a two-hour lecture on semiotics.
5. Dungarees and pinafores
Nothing screams childhood like a pair of dungarees or a pinafore. Denim, coloured, patterned, you name it, I probably had it. Give them a fashionable 2016 update with suede, corduroy or the old faithful, denim.
