As many fellow Browncoats will know, the Firefly online game will be available to play very, very soon. So, while we’re waiting in eager anticipation, let’s talk about why Firefly was possibly one of the best “Gorram” sci-fi shows out.
Despite it’s incredibly short lifespan (one series) Firefly developed a cult following, leading to follow up movie Serenity. The show was created by writer and director Joss Whedon, who you may know for Buffy the Vampire Slayer, The Avengers film, and sequel, Avengers: Age of Ultron.
The easiest way to describe Firefly is a science fiction space-western. Sounds cool, right? It is.
The series is set in the year 2517, after the arrival of humans in a new star system due to terraforming and follows the crew of a Firefly-class ship called Serenity. The central planets are under the control of the main government body, the Alliance, but the planets and moons on the outskirts are where it gets very 19th-century western movie, as there isn’t much in the way of government authority. An important part of the backstory was the war between the Alliance, and The Browncoats.
Malcolm Reynolds is Serenity’s captain, who flies with a real mix of different characters, such as a preacher, a “companion” (Google it), and a doctor and sister who are fugitives running from the Alliance. As Whedon puts it, “Nine people looking into the blackness of space and seeing nine different things”.
One of the things that sets Firefly apart from other shows is the way it combines humour, emotion, and emits realism to a very unrealistic background. It’s very easy to connect to the characters, and all in all is a great show that is well worth giving a watch.
