It’s hard to believe that one of Britain’s best loved sit-coms is ten years old this week. The Inbetweeners ran for three full series, spawned two films, and won countless awards over its six-year run. Ever since the last film, fans have pleaded with producers to make more episodes and the main cast of the show are regularly asked about its return in interviews, but it doesn’t look as though that is going to happen!
Anyway, to celebrate its tenth anniversary Callum McQuade counts down the shows top 10 funniest moments…
- The pool scene
When the four lads are on their ‘sixth year holiday’, Jay and Neil spot a group of girls by the poolside they want to impress, when a little boy comes running up and points out Jay’s Manchester United shorts. Jay tries to use this to his advantage to grab the girls’ attention by playing a pretend game of football with him, but instead the kid sees right through him and shoves him straight in the water.
- Will’s study techniques
Most of us can probably relate to this right now! Simon asks Will how the preparation for his exams is going and he has a bit of a meltdown when he explains that “nothing’s f***ing going in”, despite his colour coded schedule and pro-plus drinks.
- Simon spews
When Carli invites Simon round to her house because her parents are away he thinks he has won her over and turns up having pre-drank some spirits beforehand. Much to Carli’s horror, he brings back up most of the drink all over her kitchen and her scared little brother, who has just learned about terrorists for the first time thanks to Will!
- Fashion show
For the final walk of her fashion show, Carli drafts in Simon as her partner for the catwalk, which he is thrilled about, and both of them don’t understand why the audience appear to be giggling at their ‘glamourous’ performance. When they go backstage Alistair, who has been off school for the last year due to kidney failure, points out that Simon’s left testicle was hanging out the whole time.
- Exam gate
After staying awake on energy drinks the night before his exam, Will appears optimistic he will succeed. Mr Gilbert has suspicions Will is cheating when he asks to go to the toilet for the fourth time in the one hour and is soon escorting him out of the exam hall when he messes his pants!
- Bus w***ers
During the boys’ unsuccessful trip to the capital to try and become ‘cool London clubbers’, Jay yells his favourite phrase at a group of people standing next to a bus stop. It backfires on him when they find themselves stuck in traffic just yards up and Simon mounts the pavement to lose the two body builders who chase after the car.
- Neil’s moves
On the first night of their holiday, the four are tricked into a club by the hot door girl which turns out to be dead inside. This leads into the most memorable moment of the film quite nicely – Will and Simon attempting to copy Neil’s shameless dancing to We No Speak Americano by Yolanda Be Cool.

- “Ohh friend football friend”
While the gang are at a house party one Friday night, a boy Jay has been playing football with says bye to him, but the rest of the group have no idea who he is. They start teasing Jay with “ooh friend…” jokes and when they come across the guy’s car while out a walk one day his temper erupts. He starts jumping on the bonnet of the car screaming “he’s not my f***ing football friend”.
- Front row seat
Will has been desperate to ride the Nemesis Inferno all day at Thorpe Park and even makes the group wait in the longer queue to get the front row seats for “unencumbered thrills”. Just as they get to the very front of the line, Will throws a tantrum as three people who did not queue have been given a seat on the front row, leaving just one left. As he sits down next to the “inconsiderate arseholes”, he discovers it is going to be an interesting ride.
- “You bumder”
The winner of the countdown has to be this classic line from Will. After being caught bunking off school by Neil’s dad who walks in on the boys half cut on Beefeater gin and Drambuie, he describes the place as smelling like a “brewery and not a nice one” and tells Will he expected more of him. Will then proceeds to insult Neil’s dad with his own made up drunken insult.
