Haters Back Off: Miranda Sings Review

Miranda Sings, the bizarre yet amusing alter ego of comedian Colleen Ballinger is hugely popular. With over 2.6 million YouTube subscribers and a staggering 264 million views, it’s easy to see why some label her an ‘Internet Sensation’.

Miranda Sing’s YouTube channel consists of her very unique music video covers and her rather questionable self-help videos and tutorials.

Ballinger began portraying the character of Miranda Sings in 2008, and has since become popular world-wide, currently embarking on a sold out UK tour entitled, ‘Self Help Tour: Miranda Sings with Special guest Colleen Ballinger’. Being a long-term fan of Miranda (or should I say a ‘Mirfanda’) I was particularly excited when I found out that she would be performing in Glasgow, however, a slight seed of doubt entered my mind, and I wondered whether or not Ballinger would be as humorous and enthralling live as she is in her YouTube videos.

There was no need for doubt. Ballinger opened up the show as herself, showing off her real (incredible) singing voice. It was during her rendition of Defying Gravity that she began to transform into Miranda on stage in front of the audiences transfixed eyes, donning her infamous, trademark red lipstick.

Throughout the show Miranda continued to entertain the audience with her dreadful yet humorous singing and her refreshingly witty, facetious skits (there was even some magic). The ‘self-help programme’ segment included audience participation which produced many moments of hilarity due to her derogatory, brash humour. At various times during the show I found myself in stitches of laughter. And looking around at the audience I could see I wasn’t the only one.

Overall this one woman show was immensely entertaining and worthwhile, and I will definitely continue on in life as a firm rooted Mirfanda.
