‘Dancing in the Moonlight – A Play about Phil Lynott’

Review Score – 4 stars

Category – Theatre

My knowledge of the singer Phil Lynott and the band Thin Lizzy is literally the three songs ‘Whiskey in a Jar’, ‘The Boys are Back in Town’ and the song referenced in the title ‘Dancing in The Moonlight’. However, this was no barrier to my enjoyment of the performance given by the fabulous Miles Mlambo, who looks and sounds hauntingly similar to the departed singer.

The commitment to the superficial aside, Miles delivers a truly compelling tale of Lynott’s life, exploring his early childhood, Lynott’s adolescence and the race issues in the 50’s and 60’s in Dublin. It then charts the progress of a young lad who loved all things creative and subsequently became the lead singer and a star of the 70’s as well as delving into the personal issues Lynott faced during this period.

The final four performances of this show were sold out, the rest were very full and Mlambo and director Chris Gates must be exceptionally happy with the success of this biographical tale brilliantly told. Sadly, this show can’t be seen now but if/when it tours, which it surely must, then I’d recommend you go and see it. Until then give it’s social media a follow starting with Twitter at @DITMPlay for further information.
