Here at Glasgow Caledonian University, sport is at the heart of having the fullest student experience! From team training and competitions to social events – being part of a sports team really brings people together during their time studying.
Obviously being a university student, new or returning, your course of study is your main priority, but that doesn’t mean that studying hard can’t also be fun. Participating in a sports team can be an amazing way to relieve stress, find new friends and enjoy a sport you love!
BUCS published some statistics on student sport and found that students participating in a sport and going to the gym have higher attainment levels than those who do not, mental and physical wellbeing levels in active students were higher and student’s confidence in that they will find a job within 6 months of graduating was at 65%! This year, GCU has over 30 different sports clubs to join and be a part of. During Fresher’s Fayre, the majority of our sports teams will have a stall either in the Arc building or across campus for students to find out more about the sports on offer and sign-up to try-out for the teams. During Fresher’s week, the sports teams are hosting Come and Try events where you can come and sample the sport before joining to help figure out if it’s for you or not. You can find out the schedule for the come and Try events on the GCU Welcome app which you can download from your phones App Store OR you can find details on the Students Association homepage under ‘Latest Events’.
GCU also has a sporting facility on campus called The Arc where there is a gym with membership options, sports halls which you can hire out (most of our sports teams use these halls for their training sessions) and weekly fitness classes. There’s also a spa, hairdressers and a physio/massage clinic so be sure to check those out!
If you wish to join a sports team while at GCU it is important you purchase a sports club membership as this provides you with essential personal accident insurance and then you can join as many sports clubs as you wish! Please note each club is responsible for charging their own joining fee.
Follow the pack on their journey throughout the year on Facebook and Instagram.
GCU Wolves wishes you the best of luck in starting your studies and we hope to see you join a sports team!
